I painted one of my wheels per MonkeyPuzzle's suggestions. Despite my laziness on the sanding front, it turned out pretty well. I gave it two coats of self-etching primer, one coat of filler primer, and three coats of metallic flake wheel paint.

I also hit the front bumper's unpainted area with some specialized plastic paint. I used Rustoleum Trim and Bumper Spray in matte black. It went on really thick, so much so that I had some issues with runs, but it turned out pretty well. I hit the little "eyeliner" strips under the headlights as well; that's why the headlights are out in the picture above. I also replaced all the broken grille clips, and removed the "Outback" badge in the grille so it matches the tailgate.

Red wagons gotta stick together.

The black paint turned out so well that I really want to do the notch in the rear bumper as well as the plastic door protectors, and probably the plastic thingie under the windshield wipers.

I'll probably also do a second wheel next weekend.

So, in a month, you'll have 4 painted wheels?

Do you think that wheel painting is appropriate for a curbed rim, or can that only be done by an alloy specialist?

I guess it depends on how picky you are. I'm not very picky :).

Did the exact same thing on bare wheels and they chipped within weeks. I was so pissed cause I spent days on them. Hope yours hold up well. Looks good..
